Many Brazilians live in shanty towns ( Favelas ) - where homes are packed together in a sprawling maze of streets and alleys. We took a guided tour in one of the more safer areas and saw first hand the cramped conditions. But there were streets of local shops to serve the communities. Anyone who built a home in these areas - just connected a wire to the electricity pole & got their electricity "free" ! Not sue how safe the supply was - looked like " spaghetti junction" - but hey - a basic commodity was provided. That at least allowed them to have their flat screen tv's.
Life in these areas did not reflect the beautiful Rio we know - this was a much tougher area & a much tougher life to lead.
